Black History Month Celebration: Annie Malone

Born August 9, 1869 in Metropolis, IL, Ms. Malone is recorded as being the first black female millionaire. Her success began when she created a chemical that could straighten hair without damage. She developed her brand of hair products titled "Poro" and with assistance, began selling her products door to door.

In 1917 she founded and opened Poro College, the first black cosmetology school in St. Louis, MO. The school was eventually purchased by the St. James African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. By 1065 it was demolished.

Ms. Malone was very generous with her fortune as she often gave much of it away. Because of this, she is known as the first black philanthropist.

Annie later moved her Poro business to Chicago, IL where it occupied one full block. She eventually no longer was able to conduct business as a result of financial troubles.
